London-based firm Pavegen has produced floor tiles that generate kinetic energy when stepped on.
The firm’s intelligent flooring solution allows pedestrians to produce enough power for Street lighting by simply stepping.
The tiles activate the electromagnetic trigger generator when they are stepped on and provide a rotating motion that results in energy production. According to the company, the energy produced in one step is enough to ensude that a LED light bulb is lit for 20 seconds.
The tiles also have wireless sensors that transmit data about mobility in the area they are located. These data can help identify the times pedestrian traffic reaches peaks in the region, predict consumer trends and create heat maps of popular public areas.
If used in commercial spaces, visitors and customers will be able to have a digital currency that can be saved with mobile applications for every step they take and use it for shopping or fundraising purposes.
The company believes that the combination of physical participation and accumulation of data will contribute ro evolution of intelligent cities and will allow accurate changes in ways to address public issues.
